1. Folic acid and pteroyl-glutamic acid have been examined for their ability to affect acid production by Strep. lacti8 R during a long period of incubation. 2. Evidence has been obtained pointing to the existence in folic acid of two factors with activity in the early and later phases of growth and acidproduction. 3. Quinoxaline can act as an inhibitor of the growth of Strep. Iacti8 R, and both folic acid and pteroyl-glutamic acid can reverse this inhibition. 4. Examination ofacid production in the presence of intermediate concentrations of folic acid and quinoxaline is consistent with the presence of a pterin-like structure in the component responsible for early acid production, and not in the postulated component which is responsible for later activity.
